Edmonton Indy®
Edmonton always knows how to throw a party and the Indy® weekend was the perfect reason to really let loose! Indy® fever took over the city at the start of the summer and I couldn't go anywhere without seeing a checkered flag. Race Week Edmonton had everyone psyched for the main event with everything from a soapbox car derby and driver autograph sessions to concerts and my personal favourite, the Miss Edmonton Indy® finals.
You can imagine how disappointed we were when Friday's training run had to be cancelled because all of the rain. Luckily though, Saturday was hot and sunny so fans got ready for some serious partying, while the racers got ready for some serious racing! With practice runs on Saturday as well as the scheduled qualifying event, it was a busy day. There wasn't a lot of down time with all the action going on, but I still had a chance to check out all the cool stuff that was going on outside the track. If it had an engine, it was there - everything from monster trucks and pace cars to tanks and CF-18 fighter jets! In non-engine news, there was also an awesome beer garden and plenty of concession stands where I could stuff myself full of all my race-day favourites like pizza and ice cream.
It was a dramatic weekend, with emotions running high after Toronto's Indy®. Tempers flared, tires squealed and the only thing that could have roared louder than the engines was the excited crowd! In the end, what stood out about the weekend was the awesome power of the machines, the talented drivers and the exciting crashes. Luckily, no one got hurt, even though there were some big disappointments, especially when a crash in the first lap took out Canadian Paul Tracy and American Graham Rahal. Congratulations to Will Power from Team Penske - with a name like that, is it any surprise this guy won?
There's nothing better than hanging out with friends (and a big bottle of sunscreen) and a couple of cloudless, clear sky days. This year's Edmonton Indy® was the perfect end to a busy week. Maybe next year I can get the cute Miss Edmonton Indy's® phone number! Wish me luck!
